Local dental practice takes its expertise to Whitehouse Primary School

Children from the Whitehouse Primary School in North Shields spent a morning with two dental professionals from their local Bupa Dental Care practice, to hear about the importance of caring for teeth at an early age.

Dentist Rob Gair and Dental Nurse Kirsty Brennan visited pupils between six and seven years old to deliver an educational talk about the benefits of maintaining a good oral health routine, including advice about brushing and the importance of using a fluoride toothpaste, and encouraging a good diet.

Oral health education within schools to tackle the growing problem of tooth decay in children is essential, with the NHS reporting record numbers of hospital operations to remove multiple teeth from the under-18s[1].

During the fun-filled afternoon, the students also received goodie bags including samples of toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Rob Gair, Dentist at Bupa Dental Care North Shields, commented: “We’ve had a great afternoon with the children from Whitehouse Primary School – they were enthusiastic, engaged and asked questions throughout. We wanted to get across to the pupils the importance of looking after their teeth to prevent common problems like gum disease and tooth decay, and it was really positive to hear them promise to brush their teeth twice a day, after breakfast and last thing before going to bed, from now on.

“The role of oral health education in the classroom is more important today than ever before with the growing concern over excessive sugar intake by children putting teeth at risk of tooth decay, leading to fillings or even extractions. With this in mind, it’s important that the children we visited today, their teachers, parents and guardians, all know how to take care of teeth at a young age to help them maintain healthier, happier smiles.”

Speaking of today’s visit, Whitehouse Primary School Head Teacher Rachel Woods, said: “We recognise the importance of our pupils living a healthy lifestyle. We believe that developing good habits early on prepares our children well for a healthy future. Through visits like this, from the experts at Bupa Dental Care North Shields, children will learn about the importance of oral hygiene in a fun, interactive and educational way, and, as a result, they’ll be better prepared for later life. We’ve already asked the practice when they can visit us again.”
